ROORKEE: Two drunk men, in a bid to make a fast buck, broke into a house at a posh colony in Roorkee in Uttarakhand on Monday night and started ransacking the house. As the night was cold, they decided to take a few gulps more at the house from a bottle which they carried. However, as luck would have it, one of the thieves got completely sozzled and passed out in one of the bedrooms of the house.
His accomplice was tipsy and tried to wake his partner but failed and abandoned him before fleeing with Rs 2 lakh cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh.
The house owner, Mayank Goel, 35, who used to work for a finance company, said on Tuesday: “I went to UP with my wife and child to meet a relative on Saturday. We returned home around 11pm on Monday, and to our shock found the lock of the front door broken and the rooms ransacked. As we entered cautiously, we saw a man sleeping in one of the bedrooms. We called the police and found that he was drunk, and his name was Wasim Khaleel.”
Police have sent Khaleel (40), from Roorkee, for medical tests and he was remanded in judicial custody. An FIR under BNS sections 305 (theft in a house), 331-4 (housebreaking by night for theft) and 317-2 (possession of stolen property) was registered.
Subsequently, Rs 10,000 cash and some stolen valuables were recovered. The other burglar is still at large, police said. Narendra Singh Bisht, in-charge of Civil Lines police station, said, “We have lodged a case and investigation is on.”
