NEW DELHI: Delhi experienced a significant temperature drop Thursday, with cold wave conditions affecting the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius at 5.30am.
The IMD predicts a low of 5 degrees Celsius and a high of 21 degrees Celsius for Thursday.
This is a noticeable decrease from recent days, when temperatures at 5.30am ranged between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius. The IMD also forecasted “dense fog” for Thursday.
Homeless people sought shelter in night shelters due to the cold. One shelter on Lodhi Road was reported full.
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents and additional night shelters at various locations, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and the Nizamuddin flyover.
Delhi’s air quality worsened, reaching a “poor” level. The Central Pollution Control Board reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 299 at 7am.
According to the scale, an AQI between 201 and 300 is considered ‘poor.’ While the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) recently revoked Stage-III actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to improving air quality, Stage-I and Stage-II measures remain in effect.
