NEW DELHI: A trader in Chandni Chowk was robbed of approximately Rs 80 lakh near Haveli Haider Quli on Monday evening. The CCTV camera footage from the area shows a man firing in the air before snatching a bag containing the cash from the trader’s employee at gunpoint. Nobody has been arrested yet.
The entire incident, which unfolded in 48 seconds, was captured on CCTV cameras. A video of the heist surfaced on social media, leaving many stunned by the brazen nature of the crime that took place within the jurisdiction of Lahori Gate police station.
According to locals and police, the victim, Ajamal, an employee of RK Enterprises Company, was carrying a bag containing the cash. He belongs to Patan in Gujarat and works as an agadiya (hawala courier). He was going to Haider Quli with the cash from Kucha Ghasi Ram.
The CCTV footage shows that the assailant approached him from behind in Haveli Haider Quli around 6.05pm on Monday. When Ajamal resisted, the accused fired several rounds, but fortunately, no one was hit. The miscreant was wearing a cap. There were people walking in the lane, but nobody intervened, the footage showed.
Police officers reached the spot as soon as they got to know about the incident. Police have filed an FIR and launched an investigation. They are suspecting possible collusion or insider’s involvement as the miscreant seemed to have prior knowledge of the cash in the bag.
“We are exploring all possible angles, including the possibility of an insider’s involvement,” said an officer. Lahori Gate police station is currently probing the matter, and the local police and special staff team, besides the crime branch, are searching for the accused.
The incident sparked outrage, with businessmen demanding increased security measures in the area.
