NEW DELHI: Dense fog on Wednesday morning caused significant disruptions to train and flight services in Delhi. Several flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport were delayed, while nine trains originating from different stations to Delhi were running late.
The delayed trains include Brahmaputra Mail (15658), Poorva Express (12303), Purushottam Express (12801), and GCT ANVT SF EXP (22433).
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), fog conditions were prevalent over parts of North Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and patches in the Northeast. Delhi recorded a temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am today.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category on Wednesday morning. The Central Pollution Control Board reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 262 at 8 a.m. An AQI between 201 and 300 is categorized as ‘poor.’
Amid the cold weather, homeless individuals continued to seek refuge in night shelters across Delhi. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents to provide temporary shelter. Night shelters have been established in several areas to accommodate those in need.
Other parts of North India also experienced fog this morning. A dense layer of fog covered Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, with the minimum temperature forecasted at 11°C today, according to IMD.
In addition, thousands gathered on the ghats of Sangam to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. Today marks the 10th day of the 45-day-long Maha Kumbh Mela. So far, nearly 8.81 crore devotees have participated in this religious event.
In Kashmir, a cold wave continues to grip the region, with Srinagar recording a temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am.
According to IMD, there is a possibility of rain in Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and North Rajasthan on January 22nd and 23rd.
