NEW DELHI: Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday issued a clarification over his statement, “Kejriwal will win Delhi Assembly polls” and said that his remarks were interpreted out of context.
In an interview with IANS, Chavan said that he believed that Kejriwal will win the Delhi assembly election, which is scheduled to take place on February 5 and added that it would have been better if Congress and AAP formed an alliance, but “it doesn’t seem to be happening.”
After his statement, Chavan landed into trouble, receiving backlash from other sides.
Clarifing his statement, Chavan tweeted, “My remarks on Delhi Assembly elections were interpreted out of context. If India Alliance had fought together then the victory of the Alliance would have been assured. Now that all major parties are in the fray, it has become an open election. The Congress Party has gained tremendous momentum and I’m sure we will emerge victorious.”
Earlier, in the interview, Chavan said, “The Delhi elections are very important, and I believe that Kejriwal will win there. Congress is also in the fray and will contest the elections. It would have been better if Congress and AAP formed an alliance, but it doesn’t seem to be happening…”
Delhi is all set to vote in a single phase on February 5, with the counting scheduled for February 8, chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Tuesday.
In the elections, the BJP has fielded Parvesh Verma, former MP and son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, to challenge Arvind Kejriwal. The Congress has nominated Sandeep Dixit, son of former Delhi CM Sheila Dixit, from the same seat.
