BHOPAL: A South African female cheetah, Gamini, and her four cubs – two males and two females – were released into Khajuri forest area in Kuno National Park on Monday. There are now 17 cheetahs in the wild, including 11 Indian-born cubs. Only nine remain in enclosures, including two 2-month-old cubs. MP CM Mohan Yadav announced the cheetahs’ release on social media, adding all the cubs were over a year old, a sign of success for the cheetah reintroduction project.
The forest department has fitted radio collars on Gamini and its cubs, as with the rest.
With 17 cheetahs now prowling Ahera tourism zone of Kuno, tourists have a better chance of spotting one on safari, said an official.
