NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested serial killer Chanderkant Jha, who was on the run since 2023 after receiving a 90-day parole.
Jha was incarcerated after being convicted in connection with multiple murders in Delhi. Jha, a 48-year-old native of Bihar, was arrested at Old Delhi Railway Station on January 17, 2025.
Jha, also known as the “Butcher of Delhi,” was convicted of three murders and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013.

However, he was released on parole in October 2023 and failed to surrender, prompting the Delhi Police to launch a manhunt.
According to Additional Commissioner Sanjay Sain, a team led by Inspector Mahipal Singh worked tirelessly for over three months to track down Jha. The team analysed voluminous call detail records, conducted reconnaissance at his previous crime spots, and reached out to his family members and acquaintances.
Jha’s modus operandi was to target young men, often migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who came to Delhi in search of work. He would befriend them, offer them food and shelter, and then brutally murder them, dismembering their bodies and scattering the remains across various locations in Delhi.
Jha’s arrest is a significant achievement for the Delhi Police, which announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his capture. The police are now investigating Jha’s activities during his time on the run and are likely to charge him with additional crimes.
The arrest of Chanderkant Jha brings closure to the families of his victims and sends a strong message to criminals that they will be brought to justice, no matter how long it takes.
