Canada’s Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya has declared his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party, unveiling a campaign centred on making the country “a sovereign republic,” raising the retirement age, introducing a citizenship-based tax system, and recognising Palestine as a state.
Arya, who represents the suburban riding of Nepean in Ottawa, made the announcement on X on Thursday and said, “I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations.”
In a detailed policy outline, Arya proposed transitioning Canada to a republic by replacing the monarchy as the head of state. “It’s time for Canada to take full control of its destiny,” he said. He also pledged to lead “a small, more efficient government with a cabinet selected on merit and not on (diversity, equity and inclusion) quotas,” CBC reported.
Among his key proposals is an increase in the retirement age by two years beginning in 2040. He also aims to introduce a citizenship-based tax system and officially recognise the state of Palestine.
“We are facing significant structural problems that haven’t been seen for generations, and solving them will require tough choices,” Arya wrote, adding, “Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make the big decisions. Decisions that rebuild our economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and secure prosperity for our children and grandchildren.”
Arya, who was first elected in 2015, acknowledged challenges faced by younger generations and the working middle class. “Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face affordability issues, and the working middle class is struggling,” he noted.
Known for his advocacy for Hindu Canadians, Arya has previously clashed with fellow parliamentarians, including his Liberal colleagues, over issues like Sikh separatism and Canada-India relations. Last year, he travelled to India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though Global Affairs Canada clarified that Arya was not representing the Canadian government during the visit.
Arya has also been critical of some Liberal policies. In 2023, he sponsored a petition urging the government to reconsider its foreign agent registry plan in light of concerns about foreign interference. Although the legislation has since passed, it is not yet operational.
So far, Arya and former MP Frank Baylis are the only declared candidates in the Liberal leadership race. Other potential contenders are reportedly waiting for the party to establish the rules before making their decisions, according to The Toronto Star.
