CHENNAI: Burglars broke into a Tasmac shop in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, walked right past thousands of rupees in cash in the till, and sat themselves down for what they came for — a couple rounds of beer.
They drilled their way through a wall, drank some beer, and left empty beer bottles behind.
The incident occurred at a shop in Mathur, Tiruttani, which usually stores around Rs 3 lakh in cash secured in iron boxes. On Saturday evening, supervisors locked up the shop and left.
When they returned the following day, they discovered the shutters were broken and a hole was drilled into an adjacent wall. During investigation, police found that although cash in the iron boxes remained untouched, a carton of beer bottles was emptied, with bottles scattered around the premises. The burglars likely spent nearly an hour inside the shop, consuming liquor, police said. Police suspect a gang is behind the incident and have launched a search for the miscreants.
The shop has no CCTV cameras because owners were planning to relocate, and the building itself is in poor condition, making it easy for the burglars to drill into the shop, police said.
