NEW DELHI: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar feels India have sufficient quality that must be provided with the necessary chances to prevent a generational star like Jasprit Bumrah from being overworked.
In an interview to PTI, Gavaskar refrained from taking names of the potential candidates, who would shape the bowling attack going forward.

“India has got loads of promising pacers who are waiting for an opportunity. Yes, Bumrah should not be overburdened and if others step up then we can have an attack that can win matches in any conditions,” he said.
There are some talented players emerging in the domestic circuit, and it is now the selectors’ responsibility to give them a fair shot, according to the 75-year-old former captain of India.

When India head coach Gautam Gambhir lost his cool in Australia

“Unless they are given a chance how will we know if those doing well in Ranji Trophy will do well at the international level? Here’s where good selections come in,” he said.
Along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kohli, Nitish Kumar Reddy was one of India’s three centurions during the just finished tour. Gavaskar praised the selection committee for discovering such a potential.
“Compliments to Ajit Agarkar and his team for seeing the potential in Nitish Kumar Reddy and picking him for the Test squad too,” he said of the player, who also enjoys strong backing of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues in Indian cricket is the practice of elevating celebrities. However, Gavaskar stated that if one is able to evaluate performances honestly, it is not too hard to remain grounded despite it.
“We see our faces in the mirror every day and since we do that to us, we don’t notice the changes that have come over the years. Only when we see photos or videos of earlier days do we notice the changes,” he explained.
“It is then that we look to make the changes needed to look at our best. To do that, however, we need to take a long honest look at ourselves again,” he said.
