NEW DELHI: A group of tourists had a harrowing escape at Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh when the frozen lake they were walking on collapsed, plunging them into icy waters. Quick-thinking bystanders armed with bamboo sticks rescued the four individuals, including two women, from the freezing lake.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju shared a video of the incident on X, urging travelers to exercise caution in such treacherous terrains. “At Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. My advice to tourists: Walk on the Frozen Lakes with experienced people, drive carefully on slippery snow roads, and be aware of snow avalanches. Temperatures are freezing, so wear warm clothes and enjoy. Your safety is important,” Rijiju wrote.
The viral video shows the tourists struggling and calling for help as the ice gave way. The incident has highlighted the risks of winter tourism, with local authorities issuing fresh safety advisories, emphasising the importance of experienced guides and proper preparation.
Social media users have also weighed in with their experiences. “As soon as people go there, they become more adventurous and try to go as far as possible like a competition… A couple of people fell into the water even when we visited last year [sic],” commented one user. Another shared, “This actually happened with me in Ladakh… The ice broke, and I plunged into the frigid water! Thankfully, my dad and brother pulled me out safely.”
The incident comes as winter tourism peaks in snow-covered regions such as Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, where tourists flock to enjoy the ‘winter wonderland’ landscapes. Authorities have reiterated the need for vigilance to avoid such accidents.
