The Athletics Federation of India‘s (AFI) leadership exchanged hands on Tuesday, with the former Asian Games shot-put gold medallist Bahadur Singh Sagoo replacing Adille Sumariwalla as president.
The decision was finalised at AFI’s annual general meeting in Chandigarh on Tuesday after the position became uncontested following senior vice-president Anju Bobby George’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
The 51-year-old Sagoo, who clinched a shot-put gold medal at the 2002 Busan Asian Games and competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, will hold the position for four years. He currently serves on the AFI Athletes Commission.

Outgoing president Sumariwalla currently also serves on the executive board of World Athletics.
The remaining positions went uncontested, mirroring the scenario from the previous AGM in 2020.
Delhi’s senior administrator Sandeep Mehta secured the secretary’s position unopposed, advancing from his previous role as senior joint secretary in the outgoing council. The treasurer’s position went to Stanely Jones.
Sumariwalla, aged 67, who led the AFI since 2012, was ineligible for re-election under the current National Sports Code guidelines.
