NEW DELHI: Chief minister Atishi on Saturday urged the people of Delhi to remember the sacrifices made by freedom fighters for the country’s independence and the role of the Constitution in ensuring equal rights to all citizens.
At the Republic Day event organised by Delhi govt at Chhatrasal Stadium, near north Delhi’s Model Town, Atishi listed the work done by AAP’s Delhi govt in education, power and healthcare.
This is the last official event of this govt in the current before the Feb 5 assembly polls.
Highlighting India’s transformative journey and the role of the Constitution, drafted under the leadership of BR Ambedkar, Atishi said it was govt’s responsibility to fulfil the dreams of freedom fighters and Baba Saheb. “Our Constitution envisions equal opportunities, and the Delhi govt is working tirelessly to make this a reality,” Atishi said. “Freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Chandrashekhar Azad thought not for themselves but for the country. Their sacrifices give me goosebumps,” she said.
In the past 10 years, Atishi aid her party’s govt had launched several “transformative” initiatives, providing free electricity and water to deprived sections of society, making significant investments in education and health sectors, and free travel for 11 lakh women every day to boost their economic participation.
“There was a time when govt schools in Delhi were in a poor condition. Children from underprivileged families lacked access to quality education, which perpetuated poverty. Today, I am proud to say that Delhi govt schools have transformed the lives of these families by providing quality education,” the Delhi chief minister said.
“I am proud to say that Delhi is the only state that spends 25% of its budget on children’s education and their future. We are working towards realising their dreams, and today, children coming from downtrodden households are entering IIT, AIIMS after studying in Delhi’s govt school,” she said.
Praising the city’s free healthcare initiatives, Atishi highlighted achievements such as round-the-clock electricity for residents. “Delhi is the only state providing free healthcare and 24×7 electricity. These are steps towards fulfilling the dreams of those who fought for our freedom,” she said. The chief minister added that Delhi govt was committed to building a society as envisioned by the freedom fighters — one where every citizen is empowered and has access to equal opportunities.
Talking about the steps taken to improve road infrastructure and augment transport facilities, Atishi claimed 38 flyovers were constructed across Delhi in the past 10 years while the Delhi metro network expanded to 450 kilometres.
