BHOPAL: A 42-year-old policewoman has accused a man, who she claims to be an Army officer, of engaging in a sexual relationship with her on the pretext of marriage.
She alleged that after sexually exploiting her for 13 years, and hiding his marriage and affairs with other women, the ‘officer’ refused to marry her and threatened to kill her if she filed a complaint.
A case was registered at Mahila under Section 69 (Sexual intercourse obtained through deceitful means, including making false promises of marriage without the intention of fulfilling them) of BNS on Thursday.
Another incident
In a separate incident, a 40-year-old man who impersonated an Army officer on Instagram to befriend and exploit women sexually and financially was arrested from Sarojininagar near Kisan Path on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Haider Ali Beg, a native of Odisha, posed as a captain in the Army Medical Corps to manipulate women into relationships and steal their cash and jewellery, police said. He used the fake name ‘Hartik’ and was caught with Army uniforms, badges, a counterfeit Army canteen card, and forged documents, including Aadhaar and PAN cards.
According to DCP South, Nipun Agrawal, the fraud came to light when a woman filed a complaint. She revealed that she had met ‘Hartik’ on Instagram during her divorce proceedings, which were triggered by her husband’s alcoholism and abuse. Their online acquaintance gradually turned into a relationship, with discussions about marriage.
Over time, the man gained her trust and began visiting her home. During these visits, he concealed his true religious identity and manipulated her into a physical relationship. He eventually convinced her to hand over jewellery, which he later sold for Rs 4.5 lakh. Upon realising she had been deceived, the woman reported the matter to the police.
Further investigation revealed that Beg had lured several young women into similar relationships under the pretext of being a soldier. He allegedly exploited them sexually and swindled them of their valuables. Additionally, he duped individuals by promising them jobs in exchange for money.
Police suspect that the accused has conned over 20 women. It was also discovered that Beg had previously worked as a security guard and had gotten an Army uniform stitched in Odisha to make his impersonation appear credible.
