NEW DELHI: Arjun Erigaisi held steady at the fourth while newest Classical World Champion D Gukesh got the fifith spot in the latest latest FIDE rankings for 2025 released on Wednesday.
Erigaisi (2801), the second Indian player after Viswanathan Anand to reach a 2800 rating, is just behind American Hikaru Nakamura, who sits at 2802 points.
Fabiano Caruana, another American player, was slightly ahead of Erigaisi with 2803 points. The top spot belonged to Magnus Carlsen, with a commanding rating of 2831.
Newly crowned World Classical Champion Gukesh secures the fifth position in the Open classical rankings. His rating is 2783.
Gukesh recently defeated Ding Liren of China, ranked 22nd with a rating of 2728, to claim the World Championship title in Singapore.
Anand, a five-time World Champion, is the third Indian player in the top ten. He currently holds the tenth position with a rating of 2750.
To go with that, nine Indian players have featured in the top 50 of the Open classical rankings.
Praggnanandhaa ranks 13th with a rating of 2741. V.R. Aravindh Chithambaram follows at 23rd with a rating of 2726.
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi holds the 24th spot with a rating of 2721. Pentala Harikrishna ranks 36th with a rating of 2695.
Nihal Sarin comes in at 41st with 2687.
Raunak Sadhwani rounds out the top 50 Indian players at 48th with a rating of 2675.
Other notable Indian players include Murali Karthikeyan at 77th (2651), Leon Luke Mendonca at 95th (2639), S.L. Narayanan at 96th (2638), and Abhimanyu Puranik at 100th (2636).
In the women’s classical rankings, Chinese players dominated the top four positions.
Hou Yifan, a former World Champion, led with a rating of 2633. Ju Wenjun and Tan Zhongyi shared the second spot with identical ratings of 2561.
Lei Tingjie held the fourth position with a rating of 2552.
Koneru Humpy is the only Indian woman in the top ten, ranked sixth with a rating of 2523. Divya Deshmukh follows at 14th with a rating of 2490.
Dronavalli Harika is ranked 16th with a rating of 2489. Vaishali Rameshbabu, the third Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title, is ranked 19th with a rating of 2476.
Vantika Agrawal, a key player in India’s gold medal win at the 35th Chess Olympiad, is ranked 39th with a rating of 2411. Tania Sachdev ranks 51st (2396), P.V. Nandhidhaa 65th (2380), Bhakti Kulkarni 83rd (2357), and Padmini Rout 85th (2356).
Velpula Sarayu completes the top 100 women players at 95th position with a rating of 2347.
