BATHINDA: The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has declared the prestigious scientific and technological activities commission (STAC) outstanding service award 2025 on India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Meteorology Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. The award was given in its annual meeting during January 12-16, but Mohapatra could not attend the ceremony in person because IMD was celebrating 150 years of its foundation on January 14.
It is an award that recognizes an individual’s exceptional contributions to the advancement of meteorology, particularly in the areas of science and technology. The nominations were called from the scientists across the globe in July 2024.
This year, the award was conferred upon Mrutyunjay Mohapatra for his outstanding contribution in bringing a paradigm shift in tropical cyclone prediction and warning systems in the Indian Ocean region through services which has resulted in reducing loss of life to double digit due to any cyclone in the region and minimizing damage due to cyclones not only in India but also in the region.
As per a note by IMD, Mohapatra has been behind accurate prediction of cyclones like Phailin (2013), Hudhud (2014), Sagar and Mekunu (2018), Titli and Luban (2018), Fani (2019), Amphan (2020), Biparjoy (2023), Remal and Dana (2024). Recognizing his contributions, the global scientific community elected him as the Vice President of WMO in 2023.
The announcement of the award was made in the presence of experts from around the world gathered to celebrate the dedication and commitment of those who have made significant contributions to the STAC committee/board or in service to the larger community. The STAC outstanding service award is also a reflection of the collective work of the global meteorological community.
