NEW DELHI: After more than four-and-a-half decade at 24, Akbar Road, Congress will have its new headquarters at ‘Indira Gandhi Bhawan’ at Kotla Marg. The inauguration of the new office will be held on January 15.
“It is time for us to move ahead with the times and embrace the new!” Congress general secretary in-charge of organisation, K C Venugopal, said in a post on X, where he announced that on Jan 15, in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate the new AICC headquarters. He said construction of the new headquarters was started during Sonia Gandhi’s tenure as party president.
Senior netas, including CWC members, AICC office bearers, Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs, Congress legislative party leaders, MPs, as well as former CMs and former Union ministers, will be present at the inauguration. In all, 400 party members, including all MPs, have been invited.
“Situated at 9A, Kotla Road, the Indira Gandhi Bhawan is designed to meet the evolving needs of the party and its leaders, featuring modern facilities to support administrative, organisational, and strategic activities,” Venugopal said. “This iconic building reflects the Congress party’s forward-looking vision while paying homage to its extraordinary past, which has shaped the political and social fabric of India.”
However, it is learnt from sources the party will not vacate 24, Akbar Road, which has been its headquarters since 1978 after Congress (I) was formed. The premises will house some of its cells. BJP has also not vacated 11, Ashoka Road, after shifting to its new headquarters at Deendayal Upadhyaya Marg near ITO.
