NEW DELHI: Ahead of the upcoming Delhi assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over alleged attacks on its supremo Arvind Kejriwal, during the election campaign, party sources said on Friday.
AAP claimed that Kejriwal had been targeted multiple times while campaigning for the February 6 polls. On Thursday, Kejriwal alleged that opposition cadres disrupted his public meeting in Hari Nagar and attacked his vehicle.
“Today in Hari Nagar, the police allowed the opposition candidate’s men to enter my public meeting and attack my car. All this is happening on Amit Shah’s orders. Amit Shah has made the Delhi Police the personal army of the BJP,” former Delhi CM posted on X.
Last week, the AAP national convenor also accused BJP workers of targeting him during a campaign rally.
In a related development, Punjab Police withdrew security provided to Kejriwal following directives from the Election Commission of India and the Delhi Police. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed the decision on Thursday.
Delhi CM Atishi criticised the move, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah of “playing with Kejriwal’s life.”
Former minister and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia questioned EC, posting on X, “@ECISVEEP Why are you watching?”
The Delhi assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. A total of 699 candidates are contesting for 70 assembly seats.
While the Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years, has seen sharp declines in the last two elections, the AAP achieved overwhelming victories, winning 67 and 62 seats in the 2015 and 2020 polls, respectively. The BJP secured just three and eight seats in these elections.
