A one-of-a-kind tribute to “The Great One”: Wayne Gretzky’s legacy was honored with iconic Goal Lamp at the North Pole

Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, has left an enduring mark on the sport. From dominating the NHL for nearly two decades to holding countless records, his legacy remains unmatched. In 2016, that legacy was honored in a unique way—by having his nameplate added to a 20-foot goal lamp that was set to light up the North Pole in celebration of Team Canada.

Wayne Gretzky’s name lit up 20-foot goal lamp for Team Canada

During the 2016 World Pond Hockey Championships in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, Budweiser introduced a special goal lamp designed to travel across Canada before reaching the North Pole. Much like the revered Stanley Cup, this lamp was covered with nameplates of passionate hockey fans. Fittingly, the very first name to be added was none other than Wayne Gretzky’s.

Recognizing the honor, Gretzky took to social media at the time to share his excitement. “I was the first Canadian to add my name to Canada’s Goal Light. You can add your name at Budweiser.ca #lightthelamp,” he tweeted in February 2016.
The event itself was a massive celebration of hockey, featuring 120 teams competing in a 4-on-4 format across 20 outdoor rinks on Roulston Lake. Over 8,000 spectators gathered to witness the tournament, which brought together players from every Canadian province, 35 American states, and 15 other countries.

A symbolic moment for Canadian Hockey

The traveling goal lamp was more than just a promotional stunt—it was a tribute to Canada’s deep-rooted love for hockey. By placing Gretzky’s name at the forefront, the initiative highlighted his unparalleled influence on the sport. The lamp eventually made its way to the North Pole during the World Cup of Hockey 2016 before being retired.
