An American Airlines employee was fatally struck by a ramp vehicle while working on the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Monday morning.
Authorities confirmed that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a call at 9.38 am (local time) reporting the incident. Emergency responders pronounced the employee dead at the scene. The airport stated that the incident involved a single airline ramp vehicle, and no further details were provided about the circumstances leading up to the accident.
According to the federal aviation administration, the ramp area, where the accident occurred, is designated for loading, unloading, refueling, parking, and maintenance operations.
The airport released a statement expressing condolences: “Our deepest condolences go out to the employee’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
American Airlines shared a similar sentiment, stating they are “devastated by the accident” and are “focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time,” as per ABC News.
While accidents in airport operations are rare, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported five deaths in airport operations in 2023 and three in 2022, per CNN.
This tragic event comes on the heels of another loss for American Airlines.
Earlier this month, flight attendant Celinda Levno, 71, was fatally stabbed during a random attack in downtown Denver. The veteran attendant had served for over three decades and was remembered fondly by her peers and loved ones.
The airport is working closely with American Airlines and first responders as part of an ongoing investigation into the accident. Additionally, chaplains are available onsite to provide emotional support to those affected.
