Is Bengaluru really 'closed' to non-Kannada speakers? Social media post stirs debate

NEW DELHI: A controversial social media post on X claiming that Bengaluru is inaccessible to north Indians and residents of neighbouring states unwilling to learn Kannada has ignited fresh discussions about the language debate in the city.
The viral post was shared with a caption, ” Bengaluru is closed for north India and neighbouring states who doesn’t want to learn Kannada They don’t need Bengaluru when they can’t respect language and culture.”
The post has received widespread attention across social media platforms since its publication.
The statement shared by Babruvahana (@Paarmatma) on X (formerly Twitter) has generated intense discussions.
The post elicited mixed reactions, with certain users supporting the viewpoint, whilst others criticised it, asserting that acquiring a new language remains a personal decision that should not be imposed upon individuals.
One user wrote,” Areey waah. Someone just posted a message in English saying one region of India is closed to people from other regions of India who don’t want to learn Kannada. Reading this post, Britishers would be smiling now.”
Another user wrote,” As a kannadiga, please don’t mind this retard and people like him. We have many Covid after effect people acting in such a way. You all are welcome here.”
“I believe that only Kannada should be used in Karnataka, and all other languages, including English, should be restricted. If someone argues for the use of English, the same reasoning should apply to other languages as well. Consider this thoughtfully and not out of animosity,” another user wrote.
Another user who is against the post wrote, “Better not to step out of Karnataka or else you also will be in trouble to communicate in Malayali, Tamil and Telugu.”
Another user who supported the post wrote, “Good move. Being a person respecting kannadigas, I request you to create awareness among kannadigas to speak kannada so that those who really want to learn may get opp.”
