NEW DELHI: After their match against Durban Super Giants at Kingsmead was called off due to bad weather, MI Cape Town moved one step closer to earning a position in the SA20 Playoffs for the first time on Tuesday night.
With two points taken away, the visitors tied the top-seeded Paarl Royals, who have more victories and are still in first position, on points.
The Super Giants of Durban, on the other hand, are still at the bottom of the standings despite their two points, which puts them at eight. In order to advance to the playoffs, the runners-up from the previous season now have an almost impossible task ahead of them.
DSG captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and chose to field first in Durban.
Before Rickelton (18 off nine balls, 4×4) sliced a length-delivery from Junior Dala on to his stumps, MI Cape Town openers Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen rushed out of the starting blocks to score 34 in only four overs.
Even when Reeza Hendricks (8) and Colin Ingram (1) were caught on the boundary while trying to sweep the spin of Keshav Maharaj and Noor Ahmad, respectively, Van Dussen (35 not out, 3×4, 1×6) kept up the momentum.
Rashid Khan, the captain, was promoted to No. 5 by MICT. Before the rain started, he promptly belted a boundary over the covers and didn’t give up for the remainder of the evening.
When DSG hosts the dominant Royals on Thursday night for their final home group game at Kingsmead, they will be hoping for brighter skies.
Since MICT only plays again on Saturday in the rematch against the Super Giants at Newlands, they will be anticipating a brief rest.
