THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Neyyattinkara Sessions Court on Saturday sentenced Greeshma S. to death for the murder of 23-year-old Sharon Raj, bringing closure to a case that had shocked Kerala. Greeshma was convicted of poisoning Sharon by mixing pesticide in a juice, leading to his death in October 2022. The landmark judgement was ordered by the Judge AM Basheer.
Greeshma’s maternal uncle who is also the convict, got three years imprisonment. The 586 page judgement has made history as Greeshma is the youngest woman in Kerala who gets death sentence.
She is also the second woman in Kerala who got the death sentence and 40th convict in Kerala who waited for the death sentence.
The court described the crime as “rarest of the rare,” warranting the maximum punishment under the law.
According to the prosecution, Greeshma meticulously planned the murder after Sharon refused to end their relationship, which she claimed was causing problems in her life.
The chilling premeditation, combined with her attempt to mislead investigators, underscored the gravity of the crime. The scientific investigation was crucial in this case.
During the trial, key evidence included statements from witnesses, toxicology reports, and the recovery of the pesticide bottle used in the crime.
The defense attempted to argue for leniency, citing her young age, but the court rejected the plea, emphasizing the heinous nature of the act. The verdict has been welcomed by Sharon’s family, who expressed relief and gratitude towards the judiciary.
