NEW DELHI: Several cricket legends, including Vinod Kambli, Rohit Sharma, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, Diana Edulji, and Ajinkya Rahane, gathered on Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Wankhede Stadium.
Despite facing recent health challenges that required hospitalization, Kambli attended the ceremony with the assistance of his wife, Andrea Hewitt. Earlier, he had also participated in a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) felicitation event at the stadium.
The Champions Trophy, currently on a multi-nation tour, was showcased during the event.
India captain Rohit Sharma, who has brought two ICC trophies to Wankhede — the 2007 T20 World Cup as a player and the 2024 T20 World Cup as captain — made a significant promise regarding the 2025 Champions Trophy.
During the presentation of the 2025 Champions Trophy on stage, Rohit reminisced about the iconic open-top bus celebration along Marine Drive after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
“I am sure when we reach Dubai the wishes of 140 crore people will be with us. We will try to win it and bring the (ICC Champions Trophy) back here at the Wankhede,” said Rohit.
The 37-year-old skipper shared these sentiments at the MCA’s golden jubilee celebration of Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit also reflected on his desire to celebrate India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph at Wankhede, highlighting his consistent success at the iconic venue.
