NEW DELHI: Durban’s Super Giants endured their third defeat in the SA20 League on Sunday as Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured a commanding six-wicket victory at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha. The defending champions restricted the Super Giants to a mere 115/8 before comfortably chasing the target with 28 balls to spare.
Kane Williamson, the Super Giants’ top scorer with 44 off 45 balls, admitted the team struggled to find momentum on a challenging pitch. “It was a very challenging surface with the new ball – steep tennis ball bounce, sideways movement, and spin. They bowled beautifully, picking up early wickets and putting us on the back foot. Naturally, that made it difficult to get momentum, but we would have liked a few more runs for sure,” he said during the post-match press conference.

Reflecting on the Sunrisers’ dominance, Williamson acknowledged their strength. “They’re a very good side, playing with rhythm now. For us, it’s important to make subtle adjustments and find our rhythm. We head back to Durban, and it’s crucial we make those small changes at our home ground.”
The Super Giants’ innings faltered early, losing four wickets within the powerplay. Williamson praised the Sunrisers’ disciplined bowling attack, calling it “clinical.” He added, “They hit a hard length consistently, almost like a Test match length. It made life tough. In T20 cricket, you have to take risks, but being four down in the powerplay made things more challenging. Still, we need our players to play with freedom and smarts, and make small adjustments.”
Despite the loss, Williamson remained optimistic about his team’s morale and prospects. “There’s a lot of experience in the dressing room, and the games come thick and fast. It’s about going back to basics, making small improvements, and trusting the quality we have. Every team in this competition is strong, so our focus is on how we can execute our plans better,” he said.
Williamson also addressed Heinrich Klaasen‘s unusual position at No. 7, clarifying that it was a tactical decision. “There was no intention to bat Klaasen that low. It was about holding him back so he wouldn’t get exposed too early. He’s the best player in the world in my eyes, and we’re trying to use him effectively. Unfortunately, today’s conditions didn’t allow us to capitalise as hoped.”
The veteran batter also praised the passionate crowd at St. George’s Park. “The atmosphere was incredible. It’s a special place to play, and the energy of the fans is always memorable. It’s disappointing not to deliver a win, but their support is deeply appreciated.”
The Super Giants now look to regroup as they return to Durban, aiming to make key adjustments for the remainder of the tournament. “It’s about small improvements, staying close to the basics, and trusting our experience. With collective effort, the results can change,” Williamson concluded.
