GUWAHATI: Assam Police registered an FIR Sunday against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his controversial statement accusing BJP and RSS of “capturing every single institution in the country”.
The FIR, filed at Guwahati’s Pan Bazar police station, charges the Lok Sabha leader of opposition with “acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India”, which constitute a cognisable and non-bailable offence under sections 152 and 197(1)d of the new penal code BNS.
Complainant Monjit Chetia said Rahul’s Jan 15 statement during the inauguration of Congress’s new headquarters at Kotla Road in Delhi exceeded acceptable free speech boundaries and presented significant risks to public order and national security.
“By declaring that his fight is against the ‘Indian State itself’, the accused consciously incited subversive activities and rebellion among the populace. This is an attempt to delegitimise the authority of the state and to portray it as a hostile force, thereby creating a dangerous narrative that could provoke unrest and separatist sentiments,” the FIR states.
Chetia attributed the statement to Rahul’s “disappointment” over successive electoral defeats.
