NEW DELHI: South Africa international and Joburg Super Kings fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the ongoing SA20 tournament after sustaining a left hamstring strain.
The 24-year-old speedster last played on January 14 against Durban’s Super Giants and will now undergo further medical assessments and rehabilitation.
The injury marks a significant blow not just Super Kings but also for South Africa’s Champions Trophy 2025 plans. Coetzee, seen as a potential replacement for the injured Anrich Nortje, had recently made a strong comeback from previous injuries.

Nortje, sidelined with a back issue, left a gap in South Africa’s pace attack that Coetzee was expected to fill.
The fast bowler’s fitness remains uncertain, and his availability for the Champions Trophy hangs in the balance.
If declared fit, Coetzee is likely to join South Africa’s squad for the tournament in Pakistan.
However, if he fails to recover in time, South Africa will need to explore other options, including promising quicks like Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and Ottniel Baartman.
Coetzee’s absence adds to concerns over South Africa’s fast-bowling reserves.
After returning from a groin injury in October, Coetzee showed promise during the home series against India and in the Test series against Sri Lanka. His ability to hit high speeds and bowl with aggression makes him a valuable asset.
South Africa’s Champions Trophy campaign kicks off on February 21 against Afghanistan in Karachi.
Drawn into Group B, the Proteas face a tough road ahead with fixtures against Australia on February 25 and England on March 1.
