NEW DELHI: Customs officials have confiscated 257 grams of gold hidden inside a screwdriver from a woman’s luggage at the Indira Gandhi International airport in Delhi, an official statement by Delhi custom department said.
Based on profiling, a 20-year-old male passenger from Uttar Pradesh, who had traveled from Jeddah, was placed under surveillance.
The statement mentioned, “He was observed escorting a female passenger in a wheelchair, who was travelling on the same flight from Riyadh to Delhi. Both passengers were intercepted at the exit of the Green Channel.”
During an X-ray screening of the woman’s luggage, images raised suspicion, leading to a detailed physical examination.
The customs department further explained, “A cylindrical-shaped yellow metal piece (gold) concealed inside a screwdriver, weighing approximately 257 grams,” was found.
The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 18.62 lakh, officials were auoted as saying by news agency PTI . The gold has been taken into custody.
