Gwalior 'honour killing': Girl declares love for boyfriend 4 days before 'forced' marriage, shot dead by father

BHOPAL: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 20-year-old girl was shot dead by her father in Gwalior on Tuesday night.
The deceased, identified as Tanu Gurjar, was shot by her father, Mahesh Gurjar, around 8pm at their residence in Adarsh Nagar, Maharajpura.
Tanu, who was scheduled to marry another man on January 18, had openly expressed her opposition to the arranged marriage.
Two days before the incident, she released a video on social media declaring her love for Bhikam Mawai, a resident of Agra, and detailing the harassment and threats she faced from her family for refusing the arranged marriage.
In the video, Tanu stated: “Hello, my name is Tanu Gurjar. I am a resident of Adarsh Nagar. I want to tell you that I love a boy very much. His name is Bhikam Mawai. He is from Agra. It has been six years since our relationship began. Earlier, my family agreed to our marriage, but they later changed their decision. Now they beat me daily and threaten to kill me. If anything happens to me, my family will be responsible.”
Despite her clear opposition, the family continued with the wedding preparations.
On Tuesday night, a heated argument broke out between Tanu and her father regarding the marriage. In a fit of rage, Mahesh shot his daughter at close range.
Following the incident, Mahesh stayed at the scene, while his cousin, who was reportedly present during the incident and had a pistol, fled.
The police, alerted by neighbours, arrived at the scene and arrested Mahesh. Investigations are ongoing.
