DEHRADUN: Over 200 madrassas operating without registration have been identified in Uttarakhand, leading to a detailed probe by district authorities and police teams. The investigation, prompted by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami‘s directive to tackle illegal madrassa operations, is focused on registration status, funding sources, and information about students from other states.
In Udham Singh Nagar alone, 129 unregistered madrassas have been identified, followed by 57 in Dehradun and 26 in Nainital. A district-level committee, headed by the district magistrates and involving senior police officials like SSPs and SPs, has been formed to oversee the inquiry. A report on the findings is expected to be submitted to state authorities within a month.
“We have identified unregistered madrassas – both Barelvi and Deobandi institutions. These madrassas were not registered and were operating against norms,” Manikant Mishra, SSP of Udham Singh Nagar, told TOI. He added, “In the next phase, we are tracing their funding sources and collecting details about students from other states. At places where suspicion arises, we are questioning authorities and staff members. The report will be finalised soon.”
Sources revealed that most unregistered madrassas are concentrated in Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Haridwar, and Nainital, but investigations are ongoing in other districts as well.
Dhami had earlier said, “We will not allow any illegal activity in the state. Strict action will be taken against illegal madrassas and those running them. District and police teams will conduct a thorough probe.”
Mufti Shamoon Qasmi, head of the Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board (UMEB), said, “For a long time, we have been urging unregistered madrassas to get themselves registered. Quality education for students in these institutions depends on this compliance.” He added that the govt was acting transparently and urged madrassa operators to follow norms.
