BIJNOR: In a bizarre incident, a man was found dead inside a porcupine burrow nearly 36 hours after he went missing from his village in UP’s Bijnor. Police said more than half of Pramod Kumar’s body was stuck inside — face down — with only his legs sticking out from the 2m-deep narrow tunnel-like pit in a sugarcane field.
Kumar, 35, a resident of Bawanpura, had disappeared on Saturday. Local farmers found him on Sunday evening and pulled him out in the presence of police. The body has been sent for postmortem.
“It seems to be a porcupine burrow. The cause of his death is still unclear. We’re waiting for the postmortem report,” said Sangram Singh, circle officer (city). SHO Uday Pratap Singh also inspected the place.
“He must have tried to enter the tunnel to catch a porcupine and couldn’t get out, and died of suffocation. There was a lot of mud left due to rain, which made the place slippery and the upper layer may have caved in on him. There were no injuries on his body,” a local villager added.
When contacted, divisional forest officer Gyan Singh said, “This area has a lot of porcupine burrows. There are tunnels dug up by jackals too. Police are investigating the matter.”
