The Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which began on Monday with the auspicious ‘Shahi Snan’ on ‘Paush Purnima,’ has drawn global attention as millions gathered at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers. Among the devotees seeking ‘moksha’ were numerous international visitors, captivated by the spiritual and cultural spectacle of what is often called the world’s largest gathering of humanity.
Michael, a former US Army soldier turned ascetic known as ‘Baba Mokshapuri,’ reflected on his spiritual journey. “I was an ordinary man with a family and career. But I realised that nothing in life is permanent, so I embarked on a quest for salvation,” said Michael, now associated with the Juna Akhara. Experiencing his first Maha Kumbh, he described the spiritual energy as “extraordinary.”
Visitors from across the globe—South Korean YouTubers, Japanese tourists, European pilgrims, and more—explored the vibrant traditions of the Maha Kumbh. Christina from Spain marveled at the event’s grandeur, calling it “unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”
For Julie, an international visitor, taking the sacred dip at the Sangam was transformative. “I feel fulfilled and blessed,” she shared. Valeria from Italy, however, skipped the freezing waters of the ‘Shahi Snan,’ with her husband Mikhail joking, “My wife threatened to leave me if I went in!”
Brazilian yoga practitioner Shiku, participating in the Maha Kumbh for the first time, was moved by the spiritual significance of the event. “India is the spiritual heart of the world. I feel so lucky to be here,” he said.
Melanie, a French journalist, stumbled upon the festival by chance during her trip to India. “Meeting sadhus and witnessing this vibrant fair has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” she said.
As the Uttar Pradesh government gears up for an expected footfall of 40-45 crore visitors by February 26, it has mobilised resources on an unprecedented scale to ensure the seamless conduct of the event. For many, the Maha Kumbh is not just a religious event but a global celebration of faith, culture, and humanity.
