Adelaide Strikers’ debutant Liam Haskett was hit by two sixes in his first over by Michael Neser before the Brisbane Heat opener became the debutante’s first BBL wicket.
In Liam Haskett’s next over, Nathan McSweeney smashed a delivery over mid-wicket that went sailing into the stands and was caught by a man in the crowd.
Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist, commentating for Fox Sports, revealed that the man who had taken the catch was none other than Liam Haskett’s father, much to the surprise of his fellow commentators.
Gilchrist says, “Lovely pick-up stroke, powerful blow, seen some great crowd catching today, high, arms extended, throws it back. That man there is Liam Haskett’s dad. Lloyd Haskett, he sat back there and did not look through all the proceedings. We thought he was just a cool customer but he was so disappointed that his son on debut has just been dispatched and he caught the catch.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan adds, “That’s got to be the first time ever.”
