MIDNAPORE: A 22-year-old woman died and four are fighting for their lives after delivering their babies at Midnapore Medical College Hospital on Friday morning. All the deliveries were done by caesarean section on Wednesday. Families of the five women alleged that the Ringer’s lactate (RL) being administered on IV was expired. Due to this, all five women stopped urinating, claimed families. The five women were shifted to the ICU on Thursday where Garbeta resident Mamoni Ruidas died on Friday morning.
State govt has formed a 13-member investigation committee to probe the complaints. The committee includes obstetrics, gynaecology, cardiology specialists and officials from the state drug control. The committee will visit MMCH on Saturday. Meanwhile, an urgent meeting was convened and the hospital would send a report to the health department, said hospital superintendent Jayanta Raut.
While saying that the hospital had taken all possible measures, West Midnapore CMO Soumya Sankar Sarangi added: “The incident may not be solely due to RL, other factors could be involved. Samples have been collected, and once the drug control report is available on the RL, the cause will be clearer.”
Mamoni’s husband Debashis said their elder child was a girl and Mamoni gave birth to a healthy boy on Wednesday. The baby is currently admitted in the hospital’s children’s ward. “Due to wrong treatment and the absence of senior doctors, my two children have lost their mother. I have filed a written complaint at the Kotwali police station,” Debashis said.
On Thursday, husbands of the other four women — Sheikh Mizanur, Selim Khan, Abu Kalam and Shanti Bera — submitted a written complaint to the hospital superintendent, alleging negligence. The five women were transferred to the ICU only after the complaint.
