Shiromani Akali Dal accepts Sukhbir Badal's resignation as party chief

NEW DELHI: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) working committee on Friday accepted Sukhbir Singh Badal‘s resignation as party president, according to party officials. This decision followed the directive from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh in early December, urging SAD to implement the December 2 edict regarding Badal’s resignation.
The acceptance took place during a working committee meeting at the party headquarters.
After the acceptance of his resignation, Badal expressed gratitude to party workers and leaders for their support.
Earlier, when Badal submitted his resignation on November 16 2023, the working committee declined to accept it, urging him to reconsider and threatening collective resignation if he persisted.
The Akal Takht’s December 2 pronouncement, which addressed religious punishment for Badal and other leaders regarding SAD’s governance in Punjab from 2007 to 2017, specifically instructed the working committee to accept Badal’s resignation as party chief.
On August 30 2023, the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal authority for Sikhs, declared Badal ‘tankhaiya‘ for religious misconduct. He subsequently completed the prescribed religious penance.
