NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP workers on Friday held a large-scale protest, named ‘Purvanchal Samman March,’ near former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal‘s residence. The protest was staged against AAP’s allegations of voter registration fraud involving residents from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The demonstration went from Ashoka Road to the AAP National Convenor’s residence.
The protest saw hundreds of BJP workers chanting slogans against Kejriwal, with some attempting to breach security barricades.
Police resorted to using water cannons to disperse protesters and detained several party members to maintain order. Taking charge against Kejriwal, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari held a press conference and said “Arvind Kejriwal and AAP have a history of disrespecting the people from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand…How did you (Arvind Kejriwal) dare to call people from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand as fake…The promises of Arvind Kejriwal and AAP are fake. The people of Purvanchal will take revenge on 5th February”.
Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva also criticised Kejriwal for defaming Delhi and attempting to incite communal discord. “Stop hindering Delhi’s development and tarnishing its reputation,” Sachdeva urged, accusing Kejriwal of using divisive rhetoric to hold onto power.
“The dark truth of your mind comes out on your tongue again and again. Every time, sometimes in the name of education, sometimes in the name of health, you abuse the Purvanchal community,” Sachdeva added.
The uproar followed Kejriwal’s formal complaint to the Election Commission on Thursday, where he accused BJP of registering “fake” voters in the New Delhi constituency to manipulate the upcoming Assembly elections.
He highlighted a surge in voter registration applications, particularly 13,000 additions between December 15 and January 8, alleging fraudulent practices involving voters from neighbouring states.
Addressing the media, Kejriwal remarked, “Apparently many of these voters have been brought in from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other neighbouring states to create fake voter registrations. This manipulation undermines the election process.”
AAP, defending its stance, accused the BJP of targeting Purvanchali voters. Party MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj countered the criticism, pointing to past instances where BJP allegedly marginalised the community, questioning, “Where was Manoj Tiwari when the Purvanchal Morcha was ignored?”
The protests and counterclaims have intensified the political atmosphere as Delhi heads into elections, with both parties vying for control of the 70-member assembly.
