PATIALA: A suicide and a fire incident rocked the farmer protest sites on Thursday, with 55-year-old Resham Singh from Pahu Wind village in Tarn Taran district allegedly consuming poison in Shambhu and 48-year-old Gurdial Singh of Saran Patti village of Samana in Patiala district sustaining burn injuries in Khanauri.
Around 9.30am, Resham Singh reached the langar site and started vomiting, following which he revealed that he had consumed poison, according to farmers. He was taken to a hospital in Rajpura and referred to Govt Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where he succumbed. Resham Singh owned less than 1 acre of agricultural land and had been at the Shambhu protest site for the last 10 days, according to Sarvan Singh Pandher of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. Pandher said Resham Singh in his dying declaration held the Narendra Modi govt responsible for not responding to demands of farmers and for fasting farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s condition.
Pandher demanded registration of a case against the Modi govt, compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the deceased’s family, a govt job for his son, and a loan waiver for the family. He announced that the cremation would not be held until the demands were met. Rajpura senior medical officer said that Resham Singh was referred to a higher institute as ICU was not available in the hospital.
At Khanauri protest site, 48-year-old Gurdial Singh was injured following an alleged blast in a water heater at a langar site. He was rushed to Patran govt hospital, from where he was referred to Govt Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.
“Gurdial sustained 50% burn injuries. He was rendering services at the langar site and associated with Naujwan Sabha Samana and BKU (Krantikari) farmer union. He faced injuries following a blast in a desi water heater after he poured some fuel to heat the water,” said Gurnam Singh, a farmer accompanying Gurdial at the hospital’s emergency ward.
Farmers have been camping at the Shambu and Khanauri interstate border points of Punjab and Haryana after being stopped by the Haryana govt during their Delhi Chalo 2.0 call over their demands, including a legal guarantee of MSP on crops, since Feb 13, 2024.
