RAJAHMUNDRY: A 35-year-old woman who was suffering from psychiatry problems died after swallowing a keypad cell phone in Rajahmundry.
Penumalla Ramya Smruthi, a resident of Bommuru, was admitted to the Government General Hospital in Rajahmundry on Saturday.
A relative of the patient, unable to find his mobile, began searching for it in the room. He asked the patient about the phone, and Smruthi informed him that she had swallowed it.
Doctors performed surgery and successfully removed the mobile. However, as her heart condition worsened, she was referred to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Kakinada for better treatment.
When Smruthi swallowed the mobile phone, she was immediately taken to the operation theatre.
ENT doctors found that the phone was lodged above the larynx (voice box) and successfully removed it.
During the procedure, her heart stopped, but the doctors revived her heartbeat with CPR. Due to the lack of oxygen flow to the brain, her heart function was severely affected.
Later, her heartbeat and blood pressure increased, and she was placed on a ventilator. Doctors decided to refer her to GGH, Kakinada to improve her heart condition, but she died while receiving treatment.
