3 Bangladeshis arrested in Bengal for illegally staying in India

KOLKATA: Three Bangladeshis have been arrested in southern West Bengal for staying in India without valid documents, police said on Sunday. Two Bangladesh nationals were arrested at Kalyani in Nadia district on Saturday while they were loitering suspiciously. They were identified as as 23-year-old Mohammad Sohag Mir from Bangladesh’s Madaripur and Pranay Jaydhar (18) from Barisal.
Mir had also visited Kashmir Valley, and further investigation is underway in this regard, a police officer said.
Another Bangladeshi woman was intercepted near the NRS Hospital here on Saturday after police personnel spotted her roaming suspiciously, another police officer said.
When questioned, she failed to produce any valid travel documents to India, he said, adding the woman had illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh border a few days ago.
A case has been registered against her under the Foreigners Act, he added.
Amid tension in the neighbouring country, the BSF and police have beefed up security in the state.
