BENGALURU: A 28-year-old Bangladeshi woman working as a domestic help was found dead on Kalkere lakebed in east Bengaluru Friday morning. She was sexually abused and killed, police said.
DCP (east) D Devaraja said the woman was strangled with her dupatta and bludgeoned with a boulder. “We have taken up a case of rape and murder and launched manhunt for the accused,” Devaraja added.
The mother of three children was a resident of north Bengaluru. Her husband works as a pourakarmika in BBMP.
Police suspect the woman had illegally immigrated to India. The family has been staying in the city for the past six years.
She went for work Thursday and was returning home with another domestic help between 1.30pm and 2pm when she parted ways with her colleague, saying she had some work. Her husband waited for her to return home until late in the evening and started searching for her. As he didn’t find her, he approached police.
Ramamurthynagar police, who were attending rehe- arsal of the Republic Day parade event in Manekshaw Parade Ground Friday morning, received a message from a Hoysala staffer about a woman’s body found in Kalkere lakebed.
When police visited the spot, they found her vanity bag, slippers, churidar and mobile on the lakebed near her body.
“The miscreant was not able to lift the boulder properly, so her face was not disfigured completely. But he strangled her with her du- patta,” a senior police officer said, adding her husband identified the body.
Based on circumstantial evidence, police suspect the woman had met someone known to her. After killing her, the miscreant escaped with cash from her bag, the officer said.
Joint commissioner of police (east) B Ramesh said, “The husband has a passport, but the deceased didn’t. We suspect she had illegally immigrated. We have registered a case of sexual assault and murder and are investigating,” he added.
‘Will return home in half hr’
According to Ramamurthynagar police, the woman called her husband at noon and told him she would return home in half an hour. But she was found dead almost a kilometre away from the apartment where she worked. CCTV footage of the area is being verified.
