SURAT: A two-year-old boy fell into an underground drainage manhole in the Variav area on Wednesday evening. The boy had not ben found until this report was filed.
Soon after the boy fell, locals and teams from Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) started looking for the boy. The rescue teams were searching for him in the drainage line by opening manholes.
The boy fell into the open manhole around 5.30pm when he was going with his mother near Radhika Point. Locals attempted to rescue the boy, but they failed. Around 5.47pm, SFES was called. A total of eight firefighters and a team of 50 personnel joined the drive to rescue the child.
“The boy slipped into the manhole accidentally, and we are searching for him. There is water flow in the drainage. It is possible that the boy got pushed a little ahead with the water,” said an SFES officer.
There is a threat to the boy’s life since the drainage line has a connection of both stormwater and sewage water. Water was flowing into it when the boy fell. The line goes up to a pumping station and then to a rivulet.
“We have checked up to a 100-metre distance in the direction of the water flow. The search operation will continue until we find the boy,” said an SFES officer.
